I haven’t always had access to the internet, but have had access in some form or other since 1996. My first website was on Geocities back in April 1997, I do wish I still had that, or least kept access to it alive so I could point to it now. It started as a basic “This is me” type page, and info on a few things I was involved in at the time. I was, keep in mind, 12 years old.
It has migrated through several hosts, and more than one address, and through many technologies (PHP 3, JSP, ASP, PHP4, WordPress, MovableType, PHP5, Ruby on Rails and SimpleLog).
Patrick’s Soapbox now lives on Tumblr. Introducing Patrick is almost plain XHTML (has a PHP include to include the header/footer and stylesheet, and a shell script to generate the HTML on SVN update). Most other parts of Soapbox run within a Rails app that was once SimpleLog, but aren’t really connected. Some of the parts that live on m.ac.nz are powered by Google AppEngine.

Hosting is currently spread across a box at ServerPronto, a Joyent accelerator, Google, and various small virtual servers. with some assets being served either through CloudFront or Cachefly CDNs.
